Support all Students

To: Kern High School District School Board

After delivering the petition at the May Board meeting, I met with the assistant superintendent of Kern High School District. He presented me with a written privacy and non-discrimination act that the district passed and is working on implementing. This policy is close to the California School Boards Association's model policy for implementing AB 1266. Thank you to everyone who supported this campaign!

Campaign created by Dean Welliver Icon-email

Give all students, including transgender students, the opportunity to do well in school and graduate. Pass a policy affirming that the district, in accordance with the law, expects schools to work with transgender students on a case-by-case basis to ensure they can participate in activities and access facilities consistent with their gender identity.

Why is this important?

My name is Dean Welliver and I am a transgender boy. Being transgender means that I identify and know that who I really am is different from the gender I was assigned at birth.

Two and a half years ago, I left traditional public school and started attending an online charter school. I'm now a senior, and I still miss being on a campus. I've wished I could return for a long time, but I knew that the school would not know how to support me and give me the same opportunity to do well as other students. I live my life every day as a boy, and it seems ridiculous and painful to me that when going to school I would be forced to use girls facilities. It is because of this that I've had to miss out on the experience of attending a traditional school, such as seeing my friends everyday, learning in a classroom with other students, and being able to join clubs and participate in activities on campus.

AB 1266 -- the law that went into effect in January -- gives schools the guidance they need to ensure all students have the opportunity to do well. If the district had agreed and known to follow these guidelines a few years ago, I would be finishing school on a traditional campus today. Please issue a policy affirming that the Kern High School District will use those guidelines to work with transgender students on a case-by-case basis to ensure that other transgender students will be able to be themselves at school and won't have to miss out on the opportunities and experiences that high school provides.

As a genderqueer transman, I understand how important things like this are for high school students and how necessary it is for them to have a safe space and a supportive space that I wish I had access to when I was in college

As a member of the trans community, recently out of high school, I my gender dysphoria increased. If AB 1266 was passed when I started high school, I would have felt safer and would have had a better experience. I want to support this with great honor as these youth need everyone's support to flourish once and for all.
